With over 20 years’ experience in this career, Director of Property Management, Cathie Crampton shares her advice on how to make every day as a property manager your best day.

How to make every day your best day comes down to mind set. Whether you’re waking up for the day or walking into the workplace, the first thing you need to do is focus on your mind set.

“A good way to achieve this is to firstly be grateful for what you’ve got, and secondly set the goals you’d like to achieve for the day.” says Cathie.

While this is applicable in almost everyday, preparing for a busy day is crucial in property management.

In addition to this, develop a positive morning routine. This could be anything from getting up and exercising or waking up and enjoying a cup of tea on the deck.

Time Management

“When you’re in the workplace, a key part of time management is the way you organise your diary. In a busy and demanding industry, there are ways which you can structure your time to make it more manageable.” advises Cathie.

Group like-tasks together. For example, group your inspections together, your appraisals together and your prospecting sessions together.

Remember to set aside a short amount of time each morning where you’re able to sort out some ‘life admin’. This may be the first thing you do when you get into the office while having a cup of tea. Once complete, you can forget about those tasks and move on with your productive day.

Dollar Productive Activities

Don’t waste your time on tasks which are not dollar productive. Dollar productive tasks are activities which talk to the growth in your role and help create productive outcomes.

For example, a Business Development Manager may not be productive at paperwork. Instead, it may be more dollar productive for them to be meeting with clients to sign up new listings.

For a Property Manager, it may be more dollar productive to be meeting with clients to provide updates, rather than being bogged down in paperwork.

Correctly Tasking Yourself

We can tend to hide behind non-dollar productive activity. As a result, we can have unproductive days.

Correctly tasking yourself means sticking to the tasks which are dollar productive for your role.

Everybody in a team should have core responsibilities, which talk to the most productive way to do that role. For example, a leasing agent may be best utilised showing properties and finalising applications, rather than doing run sheets and paperwork which may be better done by an administration member of the team.

Our rentals department supports our Property Managers to ensure these tasks don’t creep into valuable, important time.
