How to prepare your lawn for the warmer months

As we farewell winter and say hello to the warmer months in Brisbane, it’s important to give your lawn a little attention for amazing long-term results.

We’ve put together a quick go-to guide to get your yard looking the best on the street…

Remember to rake

To get things off to the right start, rake your lawn to free up any matted patches and encourage aeration. This is a simple way to break up any compacted soil, allowing grass roots to take hold. Also, this basic task will remove any fallen leave and debris, making your lawn both healthy and attractive. Two birds, one stone!

Fertilise for flourishing growth

Lawns benefit from being fertilised early in the season; if you're going to  fertilise, make it spring. A fertiliser with nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen will ensure a suitable PH level and encourage a strong grassroot hold. New to lawn care? It can be helpful to conduct a PH level test (you can find an array of testing kits at most hardware and garden stores) and base your choice of fertiliser on the results.

WaterSprinkler

Come rain, come shine…

As we come out of the ‘dry season’, Brisbane lawns will usually receive enough rainfall naturally throughout spring. However, if the grass is looking yellowed and patchy, don’t be afraid to top it up with a little extra water with a hose or sprinkler. Rule of thumb for spring: water less frequently, but more deeply.

With the heavy rains we’ve experienced this year, it’s smart to allow as much water as possible to naturally drain before inspecting the soil and getting back into a regular mowing routine. This will avoid long-term damage and any soil compaction.

Get ahead by weeding

As spring begins to blossom and flourish, so too can weeds. Nip things in the bud (so to speak) by weeding and using herbicide, if preferred, on any unwelcome growth as it appears. This will save having to spend all day tackling the task later down the line.

Maintain by mowing

Not unlike removing dead ends when getting a haircut, keeping up regular mowing will strengthen your lawn over time. Take the start of the new season as your cue to check if your mower’s blades are sharp. Dull blades can damage your lawn and cause a fungus called ‘grey leaf’, which will make grass unhealthy and drained of colour. A little preparation can make all the difference!

Top tips for a spring-ready lawn

  1. Break up any matted grass and encourage strong grassroot growth by raking.
  2. Fertilise your lawn with healthy nutrients.
  3. Water your lawn less frequently, but more deeply.
  4. Weed or use herbicides on any unwelcome growths as they appear.
  5. Keep up regular mowing and check the sharpness of your mower’s blades.
