How to Maximise Space in Apartment Living

Thursday June 17, 2021 ● By Emily Russ // Place Estate Agents

A low-maintenance lifestyle, single-level living, affordability – it’s not hard to see the appeal of an apartment. Wanting to make your property feel as spacious as possible? We’ve gathered five basic tips to maximise space in your apartment…

Invest in multifunctional furniture and clever storage

When you’re working with limited space, you have to really channel your inner Marie Kondo and decide exactly what gets to stay there. It’s time for some tough love.

Luckily, furniture designers are producing truly incredible pieces that ensure what you use in a room is functional in more ways than one – from hidden Murphy beds to couches with charging stations and integrated shelves. Even the humble coffee table can double as storage; look for options with shelves underneath to make the most of used floor-space. A combined kitchen island and bench is also popular for a reason; bonus points if it has wheels that allow you to open up the space as much or as little as you need. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are a classic, while open shelves make storing items easy while creating a clean and airy look.

Emphasise natural light and opt for a simple colour palette

It’s a well-known fact that dark colours can make a space feel boxed-in. An accent wall in a bold tone can help add personality, but keep the overall colour palette soft to trick the eye and reflect any natural light coming in. Similarly, mirrors and any reflective surfaces will help fill a space with light – think mirrored kitchen splashbacks, glass vases and even mirrored cabinetry.

A simple colour palette will also effectively elongate any hallways – remember the trick about wearing nude-hued shoes to make your legs appear longer? Add pops of colour and depth in your textures, rather than on your walls. Rugs, cushions, curtains, couches and armchairs all lend themselves to a little creative expression.

Create a major focal point

Don’t be afraid to think big when it comes to statement artwork, literally. Designers will often use a large-scale piece or installation to add a feeling a grandeur, bringing a clear ‘focal point’ into a space instead of clutter.

The same idea applies to lighting. If the space allows it, consider a floor-lamp with an interesting design or draw the eye upwards with a unique pendant light.

Utilise indoor-outdoor areas

Everyone knows about ‘bringing the outdoors in’, but seamlessly connecting your central living area to an al fresco space is a simple idea that’s wonderfully effective.

If your abode features a sizeable balcony, terrace, courtyard or patio, extend the entertainment and living options by adding functional furniture. An outdoor dining set creates the scene for fabulous barbecues and al fresco meals, while a lounge or daybed will inspire a resort-like feel. Be sure to not cram the entire space with furniture, though. Think about exactly how you’ll use the space and share it with guests before you over-shop.

Make the most of corners

One final piece of advice? Corners are not the enemy – embrace them with a modular sofa to use the space in a functional way. Or, bring in bookshelves that can be easily lined up against a wall and filled with your treasures.

If you’re not renting, give thought to adding a built-in bench with under-seat storage that can wrap around walls. You can fill these beauties with old cookbooks, children’s toys or anything you don’t always want on display. Two birds, one stone!
