How to best maintain your home’s solar panels

Delivering renewable energy that is more friendly to the planet, solar power systems are being installed in homes across Brisbane and are reducing the electricity bills of many Queenslanders.

Unsure how to keep your solar power system working at its best? We’ve gathered some need-to-know advice to get you started…

Why is it important to check your solar panels?

Much like inspecting your home’s gutters before storm season or checking the battery life of your smoke alarms, taking a look at your property’s solar panels is a quick task that can really make a difference. It’s recommended that you check and clean your panels between two and four times a year; mark it on your calendar or set (at least) a bi-annual goal to get on your home’s roof and see how well your panels might be performing.

Dust and debris can gather over time, blocking potential sunlight and making your panels less effective. Water and moisture seepage can also cause deterioration if not seen to early, as can damage from hail or excessive sunlight. Regular maintenance can ensure the longevity of the panels, as well as maximise future power bill savings and avoid potential solar panel fires.

What should you be looking for?

According to the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Regulator, you should check that your panels are clean, secure and free of any defects. Take a proper look to see if there is any corrosion and that the vents are free of debris. Also, inspect the fittings and cables to ensure that they are securely attached. Additionally, it’s advisable that you check the inverter display panel to see if any faults have been recorded and to ensure that access to the isolator switch hasn’t been impeded.

Most solar panel systems will offer an app that can be used to monitor the panels’ output. If the output appears low, this might be due to debris obstructing the panels and not allowing them to capture the best sunlight. If applicable, take a moment to inspect the output of your panels and you might just save yourself from future bill shock.

What is a DC isolator?

One of the most crucial factors to consider is your solar power system’s DC isolator. Essentially, this clever piece of technology is a manually operated switch that turns the power flow from the panels to the inverter. It’s a current requirement under the Australian Standard that all solar PV installations include one, making sure the home is safe. In the unfortunate case of a fire, a DC isolator can also protect attending firefighters from being electrocuted.

These switches typically have metallic covers that shelter them from the elements – when inspecting your panels, check that yours is still in place. A professional technician can also take a look to see if any water has gotten into the DC isolator.

How can solar panels be cleaned?

Thankfully, cleaning your panels is quite a simple task that can be completed with a leaf blower or a garden hose. Give them a decent wash and make sure anything that might be obstructing the panels is removed for optimum results.

There are also professional solar panel cleaning services available; a number of businesses also offer maintenance services, allowing you to complete two important tasks at once!

What should I do if I’m a tenant and my rental property has solar panels?

Legally, landlords are responsible for making sure that a property’s solar power system is appropriately maintained. Tenants are within their rights to request inspections of their solar panels and the safety of their home.
