Case Study: A piece of Morningside's history

Thursday March 3, 2022 ● By Grace Holgate // Place Estate Agents

38 Monmouth Street, backyard area

It's not everyday that you get to walk into your own backyard and into a half Olympic-sized swimming pool, but for the Schmidt family, it has been their most loved feature of their Morningside home for over 5 years.

A piece of history located in Brisbane's Morningside, 38 Monmouth Street is a beautiful suburban home with everything you could ever need, including a half Olympic-sized swimming pool and a basketball key.

Kathy and Aaron Schmidt, their two children and Kathy's mother have called this beautifully modernised Queenslander home since 2017, but it's time for the family to find their new happy Place.

"We wanted to move closer to our kids high school and my mum who was living with us has recently transitioned into a retirement home," Kathy said.

"We will miss it."

"It's just the right time for us, there were a few factors that enabled us to think it was the perfect time to shift, including the current state of the market."

The home sits on a large 948m2 corner block and currently offers a genuine dual occupancy design that is suited to many family dynamics and living styles.

"The layout of the house has so many possibilities. You could keep the home as a dual occupancy or given the ways of working with COVID-19, you could turn downstairs into a home office and no one would ever need to come into your space," Kathy said.

"With the way it's been designed, you could remove a few walls and make it one grand home...the home provides a lot of opportunities that would suit multiple people's circumstances."

The incredible 25m x 5.4m pool, including four starting blocks is more than just an impressive feature of the home. It holds rich history and many memories for the local community.

"The pool has a lovely history for Morningside. It used to be the local swim school for the area. The house has only ever been owned by two families, which is my family and the previous family. The previous family ran the local swimming school about 40 years ago," Kathy said.

"It’s even where the local Sts Peter and Paul's School kids came to learn to swim. A lot of people learnt to swim here who lived in the area growing up. We have a few friends who have said "oh my goodness I learnt to swim here" and "you’ve got the house with the pool!"

"When we got our home styled, the stylist walked into our home and remembered that she used to walk down here as a kid for swimming lessons as she went to Sts Peters and Paul's which is pretty special."

The Schmidt family wanted to keep the pool as it was when they moved into the home and hope that the new owners love the pool as much as they do.

"When we moved in, we definitely wanted to keep the pool as original as possible, we just resurfaced it and did some aesthetic work," Kathy said.

"We then added in the basketball court key area and tried to keep as much land as possible so to not overdevelop the block."

"It’s been so wonderful connecting with the community through our home and we hope it doesn’t change cause it’s a real part of the local community and history."

While the Schmidt family spent many days in the pool, Kathy admitted that it didn't spark a passion for swimming for her kids.

"I don't have little Olympians which is very disappointing [laughs]...It's going to be hard for the kids to have a normal pool now, they think this is normal!"

Kathy is excited about taking the home to Auction with Meagan Muir and the Place team this weekend and can't wait for people to experience the individuality of the home.

"The Place auction method certainly attracted us and it was certainly Megan’s advice too. It’s such a unique home in an incredible location and we are eager to see what the markets position on the home is."

"We had such a wonderful experience with Meagan and the Place team when we bought the home and now we’re having a wonderful experience whilst selling the home. We couldn’t be happier."

38 Monmouth Street will be sold at Auction this Saturday the 5th of March at 11.00am, On Site.
