As the weather warms up and we host guests for summertime celebrations, naturally we’re spending more time in our outdoor areas. Wanting to reimagine your home’s garden and al fresco areas? Read on to discover the most sensational exterior design trends for 2025…
Private wellness retreats
If your home is your sanctuary, so too is your outdoor area in 2025. This year, we’re looking to escape to tranquillity and embrace wellness in both simple and exciting ways. Those seeking a peaceful getaway should consider including spa-like elements such as plush outdoor seating and cosy garden ‘nooks’. When it comes to landscaping, give thought to adding stone accents and towering free-flowing greenery that cocoon you in nature.
According to realestate.com.au, there has also been a significant increase in searches for the keyword ‘sauna’ as more homeowners invest in creating their own resort-style experience at home. Swimming pools (including plunge and larger options) and spas have enduring appeal with traditionalists, while ice baths and dedicated yoga spaces are also growing in popularity.
Woven materials
Artisanal furniture and décor is having a moment currently for our outdoor spaces, as well as our interiors. Outdoor lounges and dining sets have evolved to become increasingly sophisticated in 2025, featuring woven materials with a focus on natural elements. Not only is this look timeless, it also helps to blend in with its surroundings and create a cohesive environment.
Rattan and wicker are classic styles that evoke visions of soaking up the sun on a Mediterranean isle or tropical beach. Sounds utterly idyllic to us!
Custom pool shapes
Luxury-lovers, this one’s for you. Promising to make your outdoor area undeniably lavish, a unique pool design that complements its accompanying landscape can have spectacular impact.
Curved edges and organic shapes are in demand at the moment, thanks to their seamless and refined appearance. Additionally, round plunge pools (both above- and in-ground) are excellent options for smaller outdoor areas.
Forest-inspired gardens
Whether it’s in a large section or used as a boarder, micro forest-inspired gardens are perfect for homeowners wanting to establish a sense of calm and Zen in their outdoor areas. Forming a canopy by grouping together tall column-like trees can also create privacy and much-needed shade in summer – tick and tick!
For the best results, plant larger shade-producing trees and then layer with shorter ‘understory’ trees and leafy ground cover shrubbery. Crazy-pave pathways and meandering stepping stones also invite you to wander through the garden and slow life down for a moment.
Unstructured wildflower and native gardens
Softer landscaping is a definite theme for 2025, encouraging us to become a little more creative and less structured. Layered free-form gardens celebrating native plants and wildflowers can be made elevated by clever design, especially when punctuated by natural stone elements and integrated seating.
Not sure where to start? Look into what varieties are native to your area – westringia, native banksia, lilly pilly and grevillea typically work well and are beloved by wildlife. You can also add in ornamental grasses that fill blank spaces and catch refreshing breezes. For wildflowers, consider everlasting daisies, Geraldton wax, kangaroo paw and flannel flowers.
