2022 is nearly over and we’re now casting our eyes forward to the year ahead.
Ready to update your home in 2023? We’ve found the interior design trends you’ll be loving in the new year...
Statement lighting
A 2022 trend that’s making even more of an impact next year, statement lighting will appear in the form of large lampshades, striking pendant lights and sophisticated chandeliers. An effective way of creating grandeur, these eye-catching additions can also work as decorative pieces that give a space personality. Key items to look out for include ceramic table lamps, glamorous wall sconces and lampshades with patterned designs or interesting textures.
Bold marble accents
Often the finishing touch of luxurious kitchens and bathrooms, marble is really having a moment right now. Straying away from the traditional white and grey colour palette, this updated look embraces punchy tones such as cobalt blue, rich burgundy and emerald green. Classic off-white slabs with more dramatic and colourful ‘veining’ is also proving popular, as is mixing multiple marble textures in the one space.
European influences
As internal travel becomes more accessible again and our wanderlust is growing, it seems home-owners are wanting to create their own European-inspired retreat at home. Designers are currently taking their style cues from Italian villas and trattorias, as well as elegant French Riviera estates. To make your abode feel like a five-star retreat, opt for light linen textures, artisan decorative pieces, striped upholstery and gilded details.
Moody colour palettes
Beautifully complementing other on-trend elements such as marble and European-style décor, moody colour palettes made up of rich tones are big for next year. Seek out deep blue, green, burgundy and purple hues for your walls and consider colour-blocking with wallpaper and furnishings in the same tones. Keeping in theme with this, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2023, Viva Magenta, is a vibrant jewel hue that can look amazing when paired with a moody colour palette.
Layered textures
Perfect for adding dimension and character to a space, layering textures is on the rise in 2023. In your living room, go beyond the rug and pillows, and select tactile furnishings like a bouclé or velvet couch. Bedheads can also look incredible when crafted from plush textures, while even wall treatments are in the spotlight. Create a unique space with Venetian plaster, limewash, quality wallpaper or timber cladding to make your home feel truly lavish.
Kitchens with personality
A functional space at the heart of most homes, the kitchen is getting a little extra attention at the moment. No longer used for purely utilitarian purposes, these culinary zones are also places of gathering and entertaining today. Celebrating this, the trend of decorating your kitchen is really taking off. Along with your appliances and cooking essentials, display décor pieces that make your kitchen feel more ‘homey’. Hanging artwork is also growing in popularity. However you embellish the space, be sure to leave plenty of room for food preparation and avoid making the space too cluttered.
Warm hues
Alongside the ‘moody tones’ trend, colour palettes showcasing warm hues are becoming a modern classic. When teamed with pops of terracotta, mustards, brown and plum, off-white and buttery tones can create an instant sense of cosiness and comfort. Swap out cold grey hues for luxe beiges and incorporate warm timbers into your furnishings for a look that’s both contemporary and timeless.
Artful arches
Curves were huge in 2022 and it seems the appeal isn’t fading next year. Originating back in ancient Rome and often found in prestige homes today, arches soften hard edges and look undeniably chic. Excellent examples of arches used in design include arched doorways, rounded furniture and geometric tiles with arched patterns.
Vintage and antique pieces
Maximising sustainability, vintage and antique pieces can help elevate a space when used correctly. Mix tradition with the new by adding an antique coffee table, armchair or sideboard. Also, keep an eye out for vintage artwork, accent pieces or mirrors for heritage-style charm. This trend is all about showing your own personality and tastes, rather than bulk-purchasing fast furniture – that’s something we can all get behind!
Rugs with substance
While a muted-toned rug with subtle texture is still making an appearance in homes today, so too are striking floor furnishings. Featured along with sophisticated décor pieces and sleek lines, bold rugs can essentially serve as artwork and add life to a space. If breathing new life into a room, think about geometric, patterned and multi-coloured options.
